Medical procedures
What the vet prescribes usually has to be carried out at home, alone, and the cat is almost always against it. Five short articles on how it is done: how to get the cat ready and hold it without frightening it, how to give a pill, how to put in eye drops, and how to inject under the skin and into the muscle. What to give and in what dose is the vet’s decision; this is only about carrying it out.
- How to prepare a cat for a procedure Lay the cat on its side, fold in the paws and roll it up in a towel like a burrito. In that cocoon it loses its bearings and stays still.
- How to give a cat a pill Wrap a bitter pill in butter and the cat in a towel, and do not sit on the cat: kneel down and straddle it instead.
- How to put drops in a cat’s eyes How to put drops in a cat's eye: holding it on its side or on its front, and using a syringe without a needle. Photographs of every step.
- How to give a cat an injection (under the skin) A subcutaneous injection: pull the skin up on the back of the neck and hold the syringe parallel to the spine. If it is your first, ask a vet.
- How to give a cat an injection (into the muscle) An intramuscular injection: how to lay the cat on its right side, hold the hind legs down, and where exactly the needle goes. Step by step.
