General care of kittens
Let's choose the type of caring your cat needs
Despite of the fact that your shorthair kitten's fur won't tangle, you have to brush its fur at least once a week, and during the furless season - even more often. Brushing will stimulate its skin, spread the fat among its fur equally, delete dead fur, teach the kitten to take the touching patiently and let you make the complete and quick examining of the kitten.
The device I prefer for this aim is called "the brushing glove". As a rule it is a square glove with sisal fur. It is soft, effective in use, and usually most of the cats take it patiently. Sisal doesn't produce static electricity like plastic or rub do. To clean this glove rub it on the edge of some firm thing.
The fur of some longhair kittens is not too thick and soft and the hair is seldom tangled. But the others, such as Persian, have their fur tangled just because of they walk in the room. Such kittens need the daily caring about their fur to look and feel well with their best. I advice you to take the Persian cat only if you have time and wish to brush it daily. If you don't do this it will be painful for your pet. Either brush them every day or don't take them!
Cutting the claws
If you don't let your cat walk in the street the daily procedure of cutting the claws will help you to avoid the problems connected with your property or your skin. If the kitten agrees to help you the cutting will take you only about a minute; so why couldn't you do this? But if the kitten doesn't like this procedure you should read the chapter about teaching it of getting such satisfaction (See "Precaution of harmful habits"). If the kitten takes this without problems use the short scissors for this aim. Cut the thing endings of claws only. Keep your scissors far from the pink inner part of claw because it's skin and if you cut it this would be as pleasant as if somebody pushes your nails out.
It will be better to have some stop-blending powder because if you cut the inner part of claw it will bleed much. While cutting the claws you should speak to your kitten in a friendly voice. The calm sound of your voice will help your cat to relax.
Examine kitten's ears every day to be sure they are not dirty. You should also remember that ear mites are the often visitors with kittens. The thick black substance is the clear sign that you should call the veterinary. It is useful to clean the ears with wet cotton balls every week. Don't do it as deep as you can't see. The kitten's ears are very tender so you can hurt them if you don't see what you are doing.
As a rule, the eyes of kitten don't need much care. But some cats with short nose, especially Persian ones, can need the daily cleaning under their eyes with cotton balls. Ask your veterinary, or the person who sells the kitten for you, or cat barber to show you how to do such cleaning.
If it's not necessary don't wash your kitten! But if it is necessary you must do it quickly avoid draughts and then dry the kitten carefully! If you have already taught your pet to take the hair dryer calmly then use the hair dryer on the little power.
If the kitten hasn't met the hair dryer yet put him into the box with the towel on its bottom and then put the box at the warm place without draughts under the lamp. Look after the kitten carefully if you want him to be in comfort and not to be scared. If the kitten falls asleep under the light that means everything is OK. If he breathes hard and tries to hide farther from the light that means he is warm. In such case put the box far from lamp on some centimeters. If the kitten trembles and cries that means he is cold. Put the lamp closer to the cage or take the kitten into your bed and warm him under the blanket till he stops trembling. But the best way is to avoid washing before your kitten is six months old or older.
