Most owners don't know what does "the sick cat" mean. And it is very good. Nine lives of cat is, of course, the fantasy. But we must notice that the cat is very hardy animal and it can survive in many complicated cases. But in spite of this fact you must remember: the sick cat needs a veterinary.Don't try to set your own diagnosis. Do all necessary vaccination to your cat (see: Vaccinations for cats). Try to prevent accidents (see: Dangers).
It is well-brushed. Licks itself carefully. Eats normally. Drinks as usual. Meows as usual. Uses the toilet box with normal results. Vomits from time to time but after that looks normally. Maintains the usual weight.
It is careless. Dirty. Untidy on its back. Either becomes glutton or eats nothing. Either drinks too much or nothing. Either meows too much or becomes unusually quiet. Uses the toilet box very often either with less results or without anything. Makes much efforts while setting in the toilet box. Has a diarrhea. Doesn't use the toilet. Vomits very often for some times. Has blood in its vomit. Looks sluggish. During a month gets or lose more than 10% of its normal weight.
Keep an eyen on usual actions of your cat. If the voice from inside says you that something is wrong then trust it! Call your veterinary and discuss the changing together. The veterinary can tell you if it is necessary to take your cat to him for the examination. There are some illness which are very often met between cats and you as the owner would better know their symptoms.
The lumps of molted fur
Some cats die because they lick themselves and swallow much fur. This fur tangles inside the cat and gets a big lump of fur. Such lump partly or even completely blocks up cat's intestines and causes a feeling of overeating. The symptoms of such illness are sluggish, vomit and lack of appetite. The vomit is usually brown and you can find there lumps of fur which are slid like tubes. It is necessary to examine the vomit to be sure that only lumps of fur swallowed by the cat caused vomit. To solve this problem you must brush your cat carefully every day especially during the periods of molt and for longhair cats during the whole year. If you suspect that something is wrong with your cat call the veterinary immediately. He can confirm that your pet is sick and recommend the necessary treatment. Paraffin and Vaseline oil can help you to clean intestines and stomach at home. Also I'd recommended to give grass to your longhair cat every day (for example, leek) and in winter grown wheat.
These terrible creatures live in the cat's ears. They bites through the skin of ear channel that causes inflammation and sick of the nearest areas. Cats take such discomfort in the following way: they shake their heads, intensively scratch their ears with the paws, rub their heads on the floor and furniture. The infection of ear mites comes together with dark wax secretion from ears. To manage the illness your cat should undergo a course of medical treatment. Ask your veterinary to show you how to fill up drops in the ears or to swab ointment in the right way and also how to clean the ears without any problems.
The reasons of diarrhea are different, they may be of different sorts and very often are caused by the wrong diet. Food which consists only of meat and milk, products which are digested badly and those contain different spices or just spoiled products are also the most wide spread reason of diarrhea. But it should be noted that the products which cause cat diarrhea are individual to each animal. The intestine parasites (gelments) are also the reason of diarrhea but such cases happen seldom. Diarrhea may be caused by long journey (by car or by train), by appearance of new animals at home.
Such kinds of diarrhea disappear quickly and they need no special treatment. You should not punish your cat during these periods for it can't use its lavatory in time.
The main condition of diarrhea treatment is refusing food during 12-24 hours. Cat's reaction will be normal if you feed it not long before the diarrhea. Then during 3-5 days you should feed your cat with diet food which consists of light, easily digested products, such as baby food, boiled chicken, boiled eggs, etc. If it is necessary the veterinary may prescribe the individual diet for your cat. As a treatment to protect the intestine walls caopectat (2 teaspoons for 400 g of cat's weight) may be used every 6 hours. But before starting treatment be sure with the reason of diarrhea.
If the diarrhea lasts more than 24-36 hours without any changes to better, if there is blood during it, if it has vomiting, high temperature, weakness, appetite absence or unwatering, you should consult the veterinary. Pay your attention to the color, consistence and structure of excrements, because it's very important for the diagnostics. You have to take the example for analysis to be sure with the reason of sickness and also the example for analysis to gelments presence.
Healthy cat seldom has constipation. The reasons of this may be simple, for example, bad food or too much fur swallowed during the licking. But still constipation which is repeated very often may cause serious complications and that's why is need special veterinary treatment. The norm is if cat's intestines get empty once or twice a day. If your cat hasn't done it only one day there is no reason to worry. In the simple cases the special diet can help. Very useful in such cases is to add so-called ballast substances (cells) to the food. It's also useful to give the food which contains more water. The fresh cow liver is also useful. As for a special medicine you may use them only the veterinary prescribes them to your cat.
For home treatment paraffin oil is recommended (a teaspoon for 4 kg of weight) or Vaseline oil (one teaspoon). These oils are taken orally. If constipation is strong the glycerin suppository rectal (for children) is used through the anus. The action of the suppository is based on its melding of excrements and so helping them to come out of intestine.
As a rule these two treatments are useful to avoid constipation in two days (1-2 times per day). But this way of treatment has its own negative side. Paraffin oil makes obstacle to digestion of unoiled vitamins in the intestine, that's why long taking of it may cause avitaminose. Oil should be given to the animal at the same time as food. Don't try to make cat get the medicine because it may get into lungs and cause pneumonia.
In case your cat's intestines blocked with firm excrements, the veterinary's assistance is necessary. If you have no opportunities to ask for a doctor try to act yourself. For this aim you need enema. With it's help you have to put some warm water into intestine.
It's necessary to note that constipations of some cats may be followed by diarrhea.
Vomit can mean that you've got the serious problem but also can mean just that your cat eats too much and too fast. Cats sometimes overeat and then change their decision. Cats can begin to vomit when they want that is why it is not so difficult action to them as to us. If healthy cats vomit from time to time it is normally and there is nothing dangerous here. Here is a good general rule: if your cat vomits from time to time and it looks healthy then don't worry about this. But if it vomits very often and for many times during some hours, if there is blood in the vomit or if your cat shows discomfort in any other way and looks sick then call a veterinary. If something worries you then call a veterinary! But if your cat vomits on your computer screen that is quite normal.
Feline urinary syndrome
If your cat makes efforts when it urinates, meows more often as usual, urinates in the unsuitable places, if there is blood in its urine or even cannot urinate then immediately call a veterinary, These are symptoms of a serious and perhaps dangerous illness for your cats life. Be quicker!
Cat "pulls" on the floor
If you have ever seen it then you'll understand what I mean. Cat sits, presses its hinder part to the floor and begins to pull it in such a position. It's a very unpleasant action which your cat, of course, demonstrates on your most expensive carpet and it may be caused by inflammation of your cat's anal glands. Each cat has the glands in its anal hole. Such glands are to mark the territory with the smell and also for something like "fear buttons". When the cat is frightened it can press out the contain of these glands. The glands presses themselves hard and this lead to the inflammation and hurt. Then cat begin to "pull itself" on the floor and to lick itself. Take the poor pet to the veterinary if you indeed don't want the contain of pressed and infected anal glands of your cat get into your house. If the cat "pulls" and licks itself it also may be the sign that it has worms. In both cases call a veterinary to examine your cat.
Epilepsy is the functional damage of brain which is characterized by the convulsions which usually do not last for a long time. Convulsions may be caused by any reason which damaged the normally work of brain. Epilepsy is a wide spread illness of small animals. Convulsions of cats are divided into two big categories: the real epilepsy (idiopathic) and unreal one (symptomatic). The reason of real convulsions is hard to know and very often it remains unknown. Unreal epilepsy is an acquired syndrome. It means that convulsions may be the symptom of another illness. If you learn and cure this illness the convulsions will be stopped. Before the convulsions the period of unusual behavior lasts. It means motionless glance, losing of orientation and some other signs. Sometimes the owners even don't notice them in another cases such phase of illness may lasts from 5 to 10 minutes. Such aura-phase gives to owner the opportunity to prepare for the convulsions: to get assurance that cat is in the safe place, for example, on the floor. During the convulsions the animal falls and loses its consciousness, their paws stretch and become firm, breathing stops. This phase is very short, only 10-30 seconds, and it is followed by convulsive motions of paws which are like running or swimming. After convulsions the animal can recover in some seconds or minutes but sometimes it can stay motionless, disoriented or blind from some minutes to some hours. The last inventions showed that all the animals are potential epileptics. If the young cat has such convulsions not more than once a year you need no cure it because it is not dangerous. You may only look after this animal. But if they are more often than once a month the therapy treatment is necessary. Use the anticonvulsive medicines carefully because if the patient wouldn't get the medicine he uses to get during one or two days then convulsions come again and may be more stronger. The successful treatment is connected with necessary care of the patient. Good care can decrease the frequency of convulsions, their time and their action for minimum of negative influence.
